Organic growth 900 6,000 monthly organic visits

Shopify makes it easy to open a shop. Getting that shop found on Google is a different job, and it is the one our Shopify SEO service does for Irish stores.

Shopify looks after the hosting, the checkout and a sitemap for you, and it gets a good deal right out of the box. What it will not do is decide which searches each of your collections should win, write the pages that deserve to win them, or clear out the code your apps leave behind. That work is the difference between the stores on page one and the ones paying Google for every visit.

  1. Why Shopify stores need their own kind of SEO

The rules are the same as for any website. Be the best answer to the search, make the page easy for Google to read, and earn the links that prove you deserve to rank. What is different on Shopify is how much of your store the platform has already decided for you.

Every product lives under /products/ and every category under /collections/, and you cannot change either. The same product can also be reached through every collection it sits in, so one pair of boots can have four or five addresses. Shopify points them back to the main one with a canonical tag, but plenty of themes still link to the longer versions, which leaves Google to work out which one you meant.

Tags and filters multiply that. Each tag on a collection creates a new URL, each filter adds another, and each of those can run to several pages. On a store with a few hundred products, that can mean thousands of near-identical pages competing for Google’s attention with the ones that actually sell.

Then there are the apps. Reviews, upsells, pop-ups, wishlists and currency switchers each load their own code, often on every page, and some leave it behind in your theme after you uninstall them. When a Shopify store is slow, that is usually where the speed went.

  2. What our Shopify SEO service covers

Every piece of it is aimed at one thing: more of the right shoppers landing on your store from Google, and more of them buying when they get there.

    • Technical clean-up

We crawl your store the way Google does and fix what we find: internal links pointing at the long product URLs, tag and filter pages that should not be indexed, your robots.txt.liquid file, redirects for old and deleted products, and the broken links that past changes leave behind.

    • Collection pages

Collections are the pages that rank for what people search, such as “women’s walking boots” rather than one particular boot. We give each one a clear job, a title and description that match the search, copy that helps someone choose, and links to and from the products and guides around it.

    • Product pages

Your own descriptions instead of the manufacturer’s, titles that match how people search, properly named images with alt text, and variants handled so one product is one page. Products that sell out or are discontinued are kept or redirected, never left to turn into errors.

    • Structured data

Most themes output some product markup, and many get it wrong or double it up with an app. We make sure Google can read the price, stock and reviews on every product, which is what earns the extra detail in search results. The detail is on our ecommerce structured data page.

    • Speed and apps

We weigh every app against what it earns you, remove the ones that do not pay their way along with the code they left behind, and tune the theme, images and scripts so your pages load fast on a phone. How we go about it is on our site speed optimisation page.

    • Content and links

Buying guides and blog posts that answer the questions shoppers ask before they buy, each linked to the collection it leads to, and links from Irish sites your customers already read, which give the store the authority to rank.

  3. Collection pages are where Shopify stores win on Google

Most store owners start with product pages, because that is where the sale happens. But people rarely search for one product by name unless they already know it exists. They search for the kind of thing they want, like “linen curtains”, “kids’ wellies” or “gifts for gardeners”, and the page that matches those searches is a collection.

On most Shopify stores, a collection is a title and a grid of products. That gives Google very little to go on and gives a shopper very little help choosing. We turn the collections that matter into proper landing pages: a short introduction above the grid, useful detail below it, answers to the questions people ask, and links to the nearest collections and guides. The products stay front and centre. The page simply gets better at explaining why it deserves to rank.

Structure matters as much as copy. You and Google should both be able to get from the home page to a collection to a product in a couple of clicks, with breadcrumbs showing the way. Where a store has grown a collection for every sale and season, we tidy them up so the ones that earn money get the links.

  4. Moving to Shopify without losing your rankings

Because Shopify fixes its URL structure, almost every address on your site changes when you move to it from WooCommerce, Magento or anything else. Every old page needs a 301 redirect to its new one, or the rankings it earned are lost with it.

We map every old URL to its new home before launch, carry across the titles, descriptions and copy that already rank, and watch Search Console closely for the weeks after. The same care applies once you are live: when you change a product’s URL handle, Shopify offers to create a redirect from the old one. Tick the box.

If you are planning a move, talk to us before the new store goes live rather than after the traffic drops. We build Shopify stores as well as optimise them, including Colourtrend and The Drapery Haus, and you can see more of that work on our web design page.

  5. Selling into the UK from an Irish Shopify store

A Bubblehub astronaut presenting a strategy on the office screen while colleagues work at their desks

Plenty of Irish stores sell into Northern Ireland and Britain, and Shopify Markets can give each country its own currency, prices and domain or subfolder from the one store. Set up well, Google shows shoppers in Ireland the euro version and shoppers in the UK the sterling one. Set up badly, the two versions compete with each other and the wrong one ranks.

We set up the markets, check the hreflang tags Shopify adds so each version points correctly at the others, and make sure each version says the right things to the people it is for, from prices and delivery times to the words they search with.

  6. Shopify SEO is how you show up in AI answers too

ChatGPT, Gemini and Google’s AI Overviews answer shopping questions by running searches of their own and reading the pages that come back. A store that ranks for those searches gets named in the answer. A store that does not, does not. So the work that gets a Shopify store into AI answers is the work on this page, and we explain why in our article on query fan-out.

  7. Do it yourself, or have us do it

If you would rather do the work in-house, our Shopify SEO checklist takes you through it step by step. If you would rather it was done for you, we start with an audit of your store, show you what is holding it back and what fixing each thing is worth, then do the work month by month, with the results on a dashboard you can check whenever you like.

We are a Shopify Partner and a Google Partner, and we work on WooCommerce stores too. If yours runs on WordPress, our WooCommerce SEO service is the one for you, and our ecommerce SEO page covers how it all fits together, whatever the platform.

Frequently asked.

Is Shopify good for SEO?

Yes, for most stores. It handles hosting, security, a sitemap and canonical tags, and it lets you edit titles, descriptions and URLs. Its limits are the fixed URL structure, the extra addresses it creates for products and filtered collections, and the speed cost of apps. None of those stop a Shopify store ranking. They just need managing.

Do I need a new theme or a rebuild for SEO?

Rarely. Most of the work happens inside your existing theme and admin. We only recommend a new theme when the current one is too slow or too tangled to fix for less, and we will show you why before you spend anything.

Which Shopify SEO apps do you recommend?

Fewer than you probably have. Most of what SEO apps do, such as titles, alt text and structured data, is better done once in the theme, where it adds no extra code to every page. We keep an app when it does something the theme cannot and earns its place.

How long before a Shopify store sees results from SEO?

Months, not days. Collection and product pages usually show early movement within eight to twelve weeks, and meaningful growth in organic sales within four to six months, depending on where the store starts. You will see the numbers on your own dashboard as they move.

How much does Shopify SEO cost?

It is scoped to the store rather than sold as a fixed package, because fifty products and five thousand are different jobs. The ranges, and what moves them, are in our guide to SEO costs in Ireland.

Can you run Google Shopping ads for the store as well?

Yes. Shopping campaigns bring sales while the organic work builds, and product data that is right for search is right for Shopping too. Our paid media service covers Google Shopping, Meta and the rest.
