A dash means the platform publishes no figure, and we would rather leave it blank than guess.
There’s no one size. But four shapes cover almost everything a small business posts.
| Shape | Size to make it | Where it works |
|---|---|---|
| Square, 1:1 | 1080 × 1080 | Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn and X posts |
| Portrait, 4:5 | 1080 × 1350 | Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn posts |
| Vertical, 9:16 | 1080 × 1920 | Instagram and Facebook Stories, Reels |
| Landscape, 1.91:1 | 1200 × 630 | Link previews on Facebook, LinkedIn and X |
Make one portrait and one vertical version of each post and you’re covered on Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn. Add 3:4 (1080 × 1440) if Instagram matters most to you: it’s the tallest shape Instagram now takes.
The banners are the exception. Every platform’s is a different shape, so each one needs its own crop. They’re all in the table above.
Because the platforms keep changing them, and guides copy each other long after they do.
Three changes in the last two years catch people out. Instagram went up to 3:4 in 2025. YouTube raised thumbnails to 4K and 50MB in October 2025. And LinkedIn’s help page now gives 1512 × 256 for a company cover, where many templates still say 1128 × 191 or 4200 × 700.
So we went to the source. Every size on this page comes from the platform’s own help pages, read in September 2026. Where a platform publishes nothing, as Instagram doesn’t for profile photos and Meta doesn’t for event covers, we’ve left it blank rather than repeat a guess.
How wide the picture is for its height. 4:3 is 1.33 times as wide as it is tall. 16:9 is 1.78 times.
16:9 is the shape of a TV, a laptop screen and a YouTube video. 4:3 is the shape of older screens and of the photos most phone cameras take. Stood on end, 16:9 becomes 9:16, the full-screen shape of a Story or a Reel. Our aspect ratio calculator works out any other.
Crop, don’t stretch. Stretching a photo to a new shape squashes faces; cropping keeps them as they are and only decides what’s in the frame.
Pick a format above, add your picture and drag it until the right part shows. It downloads at the exact size. The whole thing runs in your browser, so your picture stays on your device.
Two more habits keep it sharp. Start from the biggest version you have, because a small image enlarged to 1080 pixels goes soft. And save photos as JPG but anything with text or a logo as PNG, which keeps the edges of letters clean.
TikTok publishes no pixel size for ordinary videos. Its ads guide asks for 9:16 at 540 × 960 or more, and its help page asks for a profile photo of at least 20 × 20.
In practice, a 1080 × 1920 vertical made for Instagram Stories or Reels suits TikTok too. It’s the same shape.
Client results, measured in the numbers the business cares about.
See the workIt depends on the platform, but four shapes cover most posts: 1080 × 1080 square, 1080 × 1350 portrait, 1080 × 1920 vertical for Stories and Reels, and 1200 × 630 for link previews. Banners differ on every platform.
Instagram posts 1080 × 1440, Facebook covers 851 × 315, LinkedIn banners 1584 × 396, LinkedIn company covers 1512 × 256, YouTube thumbnails 1280 × 720, X headers 1500 × 500 and Pinterest pins 1000 × 1500. The table on this page has the rest.
