What is WordPress?

The most widely used CMS in the world, open source, and the base for most of the websites we build. Right for content-led sites, service businesses and stores that need to be shaped around the business.

WordPress is a free, open-source content management system. It began as a blogging tool and grew into the software behind a very large share of the world’s websites, from small local businesses to major publishers.

Open source means nobody owns it and nobody can switch it off. You own your site, your content and your data, and you can move to a different host or developer whenever you like. It is free to use, although a professional site still costs money for design, building, hosting and upkeep.

Its strength is flexibility. It can be shaped around almost any business, and it gives full control over the things that matter for search. That flexibility is also where it goes wrong: a site built from a cheap theme and a pile of plugins, then left without updates, becomes slow and insecure. Looked after properly it is safe and reliable, as our WordPress security checklist explains. For online shops, see is WordPress good for ecommerce.
