What is PageRank?

Google's original measure of a page's importance, based on the links pointing to it and the importance of the pages those links come from. Still used, now as distance from a set of trusted seed sites rather than a raw count.

PageRank is the idea Google was founded on, and it is named after Larry Page, one of its founders. The insight was simple: a page linked to by many important pages is probably important itself. Each link passes on a share of the linking page’s own standing.

For years Google showed a public PageRank score in its toolbar, and people chased it. That score was retired long ago, which led to a common belief that PageRank itself had gone. It had not. Google has continued to use it, and the leaked documentation from 2024 describes a version that measures how close a page sits to a set of trusted seed sites rather than simply counting links.

What it means in practice has not really changed. Links from pages that are themselves trusted and well connected carry weight. Links from pages nobody links to carry very little. It is also why domain authority scores from SEO tools are only an estimate of something Google measures its own way.
