What are AI Overviews?
The generated summary Google shows above some results, built from pages it already ranks and cited beside it. Being one of the cited pages is the same work as ranking for the question.
AI Overviews are the written summaries Google places above the ordinary results for some searches, with links to the pages they drew on shown alongside. They are separate from AI Mode, the fuller conversational search Google offers as its own tab, though both work in a similar way.
The worry for businesses is that people read the summary and never click through. For simple questions that is often true. For anything that needs a decision, a price or a comparison, people still go to the sources, and being one of the pages cited carries credibility of its own.
The important point is where the summary comes from. Google builds it from pages it already ranks for the question and the related questions it breaks the search into. That makes being cited the same work as ranking: a page that answers a specific question plainly, on a site Google trusts. We explain the mechanism in our piece on query fan-out.
