A one-star review lands overnight. Maybe it’s from someone you’ve never served. Maybe it’s a competitor, or an ex-employee, or a customer who’s furious about something you didn’t do. Either way, it’s sitting at the top of your profile where every new customer reads it first.
So can you remove Google reviews like that? Sometimes. Google will take down a review that breaks its rules, and there’s a set process for asking. It won’t take one down because it’s unfair, harsh or wrong about the facts.
Here’s how to remove Google reviews that break the rules: which reviews qualify, how to report them, how to appeal, what to do about fake reviews and extortion, and when the law gets involved in Ireland and the UK.
Can I delete someone else’s Google review?
No. Nobody can, except the person who wrote it and Google.
As the business owner, you can’t delete a review and you can’t contact the reviewer through Google. What you can do is report it. If Google agrees it breaks a policy, Google removes it.
That’s the whole game. Google says it doesn’t take sides in disputes between a business and a customer, and it asks owners not to report reviews just because they disagree with them. A review that’s rude but honest stays up. A review from someone who was never a customer can come down.
Which Google reviews can be removed?
Those that break Google’s content policies for Maps. The ones that matter most to a business:
| Policy | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Fake engagement | No real experience of the business; paid for in money or in kind; several accounts run by one person; posted on a competitor |
| Conflict of interest | Current or former staff, contractors, competitors or family reviewing the business |
| Off-topic | Not about an experience at the business: political or social commentary, personal rants |
| Harassment and hate speech | Attacks on people, including publishing their private details |
| Offensive content | Including unproven claims that someone acted unethically or criminally |
| Personal information | Naming or showing private individuals. Public-facing professionals, such as a doctor or solicitor, can be named |
| Advertising and solicitation | Links, phone numbers, email addresses, promotions |
| Profanity, obscenity, sexual content | As it says |
| Impersonation and misrepresentation | Posing as someone else, or as the business |
Notice what isn’t there. A low score, a complaint about your prices, an account of a bad day that you remember differently: none of that breaks a policy. For those, your reply is the tool, and our guide on how to respond to Google reviews has templates.
How to report a Google review from your Business Profile
- Sign in and open your Business Profile.
- Select Read reviews.
- Find the review, then select Report.
- Pick the reason that fits, for example Spam or Profanity, and select Send report.
Google says checking a report usually takes several days. Pick the reason carefully. “Not a customer” belongs under fake engagement, not under offensive content.
How to remove fake Google reviews with the Reviews Management Tool
The Reviews Management Tool is Google’s own form for review removals, and it tracks what happens to each report. Use it for anything you want to follow up.
- Open the Reviews Management Tool and Confirm the email you manage the profile with (or Switch account).
- Select the business and Continue.
- Choose Report a new review for removal, then Continue.
- Find the review, select Report, choose the reason and Submit.
Each report then shows a status: Decision pending, Report reviewed – no policy violation, or Escalated – check your email for updates.
How to appeal when Google says no
You get one appeal per review. In the same tool, choose Check the status of a review I reported previously and appeal options, then Appeal eligible reviews. You can appeal up to ten at once. Select them, choose Submit an appeal and fill in the form.
Make the appeal specific. “This is fake” gets nowhere. “We have no record of this person: no booking, no invoice, no call, and the review describes a service we don’t offer” gives Google’s team something to check.
The decision comes by email. If Google keeps the review, it stays in the Escalated status.
Reporting a review from Google Maps
Anyone can report a review, not just the owner. It’s worth knowing if a customer spots something.
- On a computer: find the review in Maps, select More, then Flag as inappropriate.
- In the app: tap More beside the review, then Report review.
On Android, marking a review Not helpful doesn’t report it. Google just shows it to fewer people.
If one account is posting fake reviews across lots of businesses, you can now report the reviewer’s whole profile. In the app, open the review, tap the reviewer’s name, then More and Report.
What to do about review extortion
It’s a scam Google now warns about by name. A batch of one-star reviews appears, then a message offers to take them down if you pay.
Don’t pay, and don’t engage. Screenshot everything, with dates, times and who sent it, and keep the links to the reviews. Then use Google’s merchant extortion form in the Business Profile help. Google investigates and tells you the outcome, though not the details.
How many 5-star reviews does it take to cancel a 1-star?
Fewer than you’d fear if your rating is middling, and more than you’d hope if it’s high. The sum doesn’t depend on how many reviews you have, only on your average.
| Your average | 5-star reviews to cancel one 1-star |
|---|---|
| 4.0 | 3 |
| 4.5 | 7 |
| 4.7 | 12.3, so 13 |
| 4.8 | 19 |
| 4.9 | 39 |
The formula is (your average − 1) ÷ (5 − your average). At 4.5 that’s 3.5 ÷ 0.5 = 7. It’s why one fake review hurts a 4.9 business so much, and why a steady flow of real reviews is the only lasting defence. Our Google review calculator does the sum for any target.
What is the penalty for fake reviews?
If Google finds a business has broken its fake engagement rules, for example by buying reviews or getting staff to post them, it can do three things for a set period: block new reviews, hide the existing ones, and show a warning to customers that fake reviews were removed. The owner gets an email first and can appeal.
The law has caught up too. In the UK, the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024 has banned fake reviews, and undisclosed paid-for ones, since April 2025. Under an agreement with the Competition and Markets Authority in January 2025, Google also committed to warning alerts on offending profiles, restrictions on new reviews for businesses that keep boosting their ratings, and bans for people who repeatedly post fake reviews.
When a review is defamatory
A review that states a damaging falsehood as fact, not opinion, may be defamatory. That’s a legal matter, and Google has a separate route for it.
Flag the review in Maps first. Then use Google’s legal removal troubleshooter: choose “Google Maps, Waze and related products”, then the reason, which includes defamation. Give the exact link to each review and file one notice per product. You get a reference number by email.
Can fake Google reviews be traced? Google won’t tell you who wrote one. In Ireland and the UK, only a court can order it to, and that’s a job for a solicitor, not a form.
An extra route for Irish businesses
Under the EU Digital Services Act, if Google doesn’t remove a review you reported, a business in Ireland can take the decision to a certified out-of-court dispute settlement body. Google isn’t bound by the outcome, but it has to engage. This route doesn’t apply in the UK.
What doesn’t work
Paying a “review removal” company that promises results. None of them has a button you don’t. The honest ones file the same reports you can; the dishonest ones abuse copyright or legal notices, which can backfire on you.
Flooding the profile with reviews from friends to drown it out. That’s conflict of interest, and it can cost you every review you have.
Arguing in the reply. The reviewer rarely changes their mind, and the next customer reads the argument.
Other questions people ask about removing Google reviews
Can you delete a negative review on Google?
Not yourself. You can report it, and Google removes it only if it breaks a policy. A genuine negative review stays, so reply to it calmly and specifically instead.
How do I delete my own Google review?
In Google Maps on a computer, open the menu, then Your contributions and Reviews, and use More then Delete review. In the app, go to Contribute, View your profile, See all reviews.
How long does Google take to remove a reported review?
Google says a report usually takes several days to check. Appeals come back by email, and some take longer.
Is leaving fake reviews illegal in the UK?
Yes. Since April 2025, the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024 bans fake reviews and hiding that a review was paid for or rewarded.
Will Google remove a review from a competitor?
If you can show it is one. Reviews from competitors break Google’s conflict of interest rules. Say who you believe it is and why in the report or appeal.
